So, it is God who decides to show mercy. We can neither choose it nor work for it.
Romans 9:16
Years back I used to work with a gentleman who was quite older than I. We were on a long drive together and were talking about our lives. He brought up that He was having behavioral issues with his adult son and was considering shutting him out of his life. My co-worker didn't want to shun his son but felt like he had to bring judgement down on the behavior so his son would change. I remember I listened to his situation and opened my heart in case God had anything to say. What I ended up suggesting to my co-worker was, "What if you just forgave him? It seems like it would save the relationship and relieve you from a lot of anguish." After being quiet for a moment he replied, "Wow, I never really thought about that being an option before... Yeah I think I will try forgiving him."
About a week later I was settling into my office first thing in the morning and my co-worker came in, "Ryan, I wanted you to know that I took your advice and forgave my son. It has made a huge difference! It's like I feel free from a heavy burden. He came and visited, and it was the best visit in a long time. Thank you for suggesting forgiveness." I was shocked that it had made such an impact in his life to be honest. I couldn't believe someone nearly twice my age was humble enough to take advice from me, because I certainly didn't have life figured out at that time - still don't.
It can be so easy in life to be rigid towards our fellow man when we can see them missing the mark in life. Instead of holding people to what might be impossible standards, I'd like to end this post with the words of Jesus to meditate on:
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Matthew 5:7
Cheers friends.
